In a flashback to her youth in "Wicked," children make fun of her. Wicked's Elphaba Thropp is a distinct character, with one of her defining physical features being her green skin. Since the Wicked Witch of the West's onscreen debut in The Wizard of Oz, the green skin has been deeply intertwined with the character's legacy. She did not have green skin in the original The Wonderful Wizard of Oz novel written by Frank L. Baum, but since the film's 1939 release, it has been an integral element of the character.

The Green Elixir is an object in Wicked. The elixer first appears in "No One Mourns the Wicked" in the musical and is only mentioned in the novel.
In The Novel[]
When the Wizard arrived in Oz he gives the drink to Melena Thropp which drugs her and enables him to sleep with her. She then becomes pregnant, and the child is born green-skinned, likely because of the elixir.
In the Musical[]
The elixir is first introduced when the Wizard has Elphaba'smother drink it in No One Mourns The Wicked. Some people believe that the green elixir is what makes Elphaba's skin green. After her mother dies giving birth to Nessarose, Elphaba keeps the bottle as a reminder.
The real relevance of the green elixir comes out during act two. When Elphaba is "melted", she leaves the bottle behind for Glinda.
