Ottakoothar was a Tamil poet of 11th -12th century C.E. Ottakoothar served as a minister in the court and poet to the three Chola kings, Vikrama Chola, Kulothunga Chola – II and Rajaraja Chola – II.
Birth
Ottakoothar was born at Malari (present day Thiruverumbur) in Trichy district of Tamil Nadu. Ottakoothar belonged to the Sengunthar Kaikolar Mudaliyar community. His birth name was Koothar Mudaliyar. He was known as Ottakoothar because he was good at singing for bets (ottam).
Biography
Pugazhendhi Pulavar who composed the Nalavenpa lived during his time. Kambar is considered to have live ahead of his time as Ottakoothar sang commemorating the birth and death anniversaries of Kambar. Ottakoothar was patronized by Kangeyan who was the ruler from Kanchipuram at that time. INTRODUCTION
Ottakoothar (12th century AD) was a popular court poet of Chola kings, and he wrote poems in praise of Chola kings.
His memorial is situated in Kumbakonam, nearby Airavatesvara Temple.
According to ancient texts, he has become a great poet after he was blessed by goddess Saraswati in Koothanur.

IMPORTANCE
Once, he was requested by his sengunthar community people to compose a work in honor of them. For that, Ottakoothar has asked them to sacrifice the 1008 lives of their firstborn sons. Accordingly, they have sacrificed their firstborn sons. The poet then wrote, Eetiyelupattu, in praise of the history of the chief of Sengunthar and the soldiers. He later wrote another poem called Eluppelupattu to regain the dead members to life. Ottakoothar (c. 12th century CE) was a Tamilcourt poet to three Later Chola kings, namely Vikrama Chola, Kulotunga II and Rajaraja II.[1] He wrote poems in beröm of these three kings.[2]
The poet's memorial is believed to be still in a place known as Darasuram in Kumbakonam, just opposite the famous Airavatesvara Temple. According to legend, the goddess Saraswati blessed him in Koothanur, then he became a famous poet.[3]
