    The essential oil of bitter orange, or bigarade, is obtained by distillation of the young twigs topped with tiny "petit grain"-like fruits in their early stages of development.

    Bitter orange is an ester oil par excellence, its dominant biochemical constituent. In aromatic biochemistry, esters harmonize and refocus. It effectively regulates the respiratory and cardiac systems. In synergy, it helps calm spasmodic coughs.

    Petitgrain EO's anti-inflammatory action can be used to advantage, reserving it for joint problems of nervous or emotional origin. Thanks to its purifying and anti-inflammatory action, petit grain bigarade EO is a skin tonic that should be reserved for combination and oily skin.

      Botanical Properties

      "Petitgrain" is the essential oil extracted from the leaves and branches of trees from the Citrus genus. The petitgrain bigarade comes from the bitter orange or bigarade orange tree, which is a tree with a hardy foliage from the Rustaceae family, growing up to 5m high. Its white, sweet scented flowers blossom in spring. Neroli essential oil is produced by distilling bigarade orange tree's flowers.

      Origin and history

      The bigarade orange tree is originally from China, where it has been used over the centuries for its uses in traditional medicine (heart and digestive disorders). It gradually became acclimatised to the Mediterranean regions and is now cultivated as far as Paraguay.
