A scandal erupted when the beautiful Czech film star Lida Baarova entered his adoring circle. She exercised such a spell over Goebbels that he quite lost his head and almost wrecked his until then happy marriage with wife Magda. His Secretary of State, Karl Hanke, the personal confidante who knew about Goebbels's affairs, was a person who held Frau Goebbels in the highest regard and was thus at a loss to know which road he should now follow. He came and asked me "to arrange a date to see the Fuhrer", which I did, and now Hitler discovered what lay behind all the rumours. Frau Goebbels wanted a divorce and to emigrate to Switzerland, causing Hitler to envisage for himself a major scandal. He decided to attempt a reconciliation of the couple and invited them both to Obersalzberg. There he received them separately. Lida Baarova was a Czech-born actress whose talents propelled her to the forefront of ’s German cinema. Hollywood took notice and offered her a contract which she declined, for she was in love with two married men. The first was Gustav Frohlich, her handsome frequent co-star. The other was a short, limping Nazi by the name of Joseph Goebbels.

 

“I have loved a criminal” an aged Baarova dramatically announces, “but that is not a crime.” Whilst being interviewed in Salzburg in the year , Baarova recalls her time before the outbreak of WWII. There is an ambiguous quality to these later scenes, enhanced by Zdenka Procházková’s sly performance, which is sadly lacking in the flashback scenes that make up the bulk of the film. We know, for instance, that Baarova’s mother is living out her dreams through her daughter because we are explicitly told so.
