INTRODUCTION

Dangarembga is the first black woman from Zimbabwe to publish a novel in English. Her Nervous Conditions (), winner of the African segment of the Commonwealth Writers Prize in , is a feminist novel that was initially rejected for publication in newly independent Zimbabwe, a region dominated by patriarchal attitudes. It was eventually accepted by an international publisher. Dangarembga is also recognized as the first Zimbabwean black woman to direct a feature film, Everyone's Child (), which she also co-wrote, calling attention to the AIDS crisis in Africa.

Tsitsi Dangarembga was born in in the town of Mutoko, Zimbabwe (which was Rhodesia at the time). She moved to England as a ung girl and received her elementary education there. She returned to Zimbabwe at the age of six and finished her education in a missionary school in Mutare, where she also re-learned her native language, Shona. In , she returned to England to study medicine at Cambridge University.

In , Dangarembga returned to Rhodesia to study psychology at the University of Harare. Shortly thereafter, the country gained independence from the United Kingdom and became "Zimbabwe" under black-majority rule. Tsitsi Dangarembga’s debut novel, Nervous Conditions, released in , has been described as one of the books that “shaped the world”. This year, the latest book by the Zimbabwean novelist, filmmaker and activist, This Mournable Body, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Booker Prize.

It is the third in a trilogy, following on from Nervous Conditions and The Book of Not (). The three books examine the sickness of the body politic in Zimbabwe through the eyes of Tambudzai Sigauke (Tambu), a young girl in the first novel and a grown woman in the third.
