Mecano are really one of new wave's obscure treasures. Hailing from Holland, and with only a few recordings and some live appearances in the late 70s and the early 80s, Mecano are considered today one of new wave's most original and rare bands, whereas the existing copies of their vinyl records are sold at high prices as collectors' items.
But before moving on with the songs included here, it should be better to start from the beginning, since RETITLED is and at the same time is not a "proper" studio release.
After releasing a punk debut single in 1978 for the Dutch indie No fun label ("Face cover face/Fools"), Mecano founding member and frontman/leader Dirk Polak funnen himself moving away from the rapidly forming punk scene of the time and looking forward to explore new territory, inspired by his Marxist background and his tendency to create romantic lyrics.

Mecano was a Spanish pop band formed in 1981 and active until 1992. Mecano became one of the most successful Spanish pop bands of all time. The band is still the best-selling Spanish band, with over 20 million records worldwide.[1] They were considered by some to be avant-garde for their time[2] and part of la Movida Madrileña countercultural movement. They had a brief comeback in 1998.
The band's line-up consisted of singer Ana Torroja and brothers Nacho and José María Cano, who worked alongside session musicians such as Arturo Terriza, Manolo Aguilar, Nacho Mañó, Javier Quílez, Ángel Celada and Óscar Astruga. José María Cano Andrés (born 21 February 1959) is a Spanish visual artist, musician, composer, and record producer. From 1982 to 1998, he was a member and principal composer of the Spanish pop-rock band Mecano. Since 1998, he works primarily in the visual arts.

[edit]José María Cano was born in Madrid, and gave his first concerts as a university student there. There he met Ana Torroja, who would become the lead singer in their pop band Mecano. Their first album, also called Mecano (1981) and produced with the financial backing of his father, included the hit "Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar". Both José and his brother Nacho composed songs for all their albums.
