This Western was derided upon release, though in the decades since its reputation has grown immensely. Its significance as a piece of Dylan lore is twofold: he composed the film’s soundtrack, which includes the now-classic “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”; and he took a minor role as a mysterious character known only as “Alias”, a shop owner who mainly hangs around the fringes of the action, aside from knifing someone in the neck at one point. When asked, “Who are you?”, he replies: “That’s a good question.” Which is a very Bob Dylan answer indeed.

From Willy Wonka to Paul Atreides, Timothée Chalamet has taken on some pretty iconic roles in the past – but his latest film saw him take on his biggest name yet: the Duneactor embodied Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

Set in the downtown, NYC music scene of the 1960s, the spelfilm features a cast of young actors as now-famous musicians, ansträngande to man it big.

And Chalamet took the project incredibly seriously in order to accurately portray one of the biggest names in music. Initially having kvartet months to prepare, lockdowns and strikes instead gave the star five years to learn how to play the guitar, the harmonica and even sound eerily like the Knockin' on Heavens Door singer.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, the 29-year-old claimed he was now a "devoted disciple in the Church of Bob" and "to psychologically know inom had pushed [the performance]".

2007 film by Todd Haynes

I'm Not There is a 2007 musicaldrama film directed by Todd Haynes, who co-wrote the screenplay with Oren Moverman, based on a story by Haynes. An experimental biographical film, it is inspired by the life and music of American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, with six actors depicting different facets of Dylan's public personas: Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger (his final film to be released during his lifetime), and Ben Whishaw. A caption at the start of the film declares it to be "inspired by the music and the many lives of Bob Dylan"; this is the only mention of Dylan in the film apart from song credits, and his only appearance in it is concert footage from 1966 shown during the film's final moments.

The title of the film is taken from the 1967 Dylan Basement Tape recording of "I'm Not There", a song that had not been officially released until it appeared on the film's soundtrack album.
