A.I.R. galleri is pleased to announce Investigations: Remembering Barbara Siegel, an exhibition memorializing the life and work of Siegel, a late A.I.R. Member and artist known for her biographical mixed media installations and meticulously executed two-dimensional work. Curated by Kathleen Schneider and Nancy Storrow, the exhibition highlights the broad scope of Siegel’s distinctive body of work, focusing on artwork made during her decade-long association with the gallery.

From New York City, to Paris, to Carrara
As a young art student in the 1970s, Segal embarked on a life-changing adventure, leaving behind the bustling streets of New York to explore the artistic wonders of Paris. It was there, surrounded by the awe-inspiring grandeur of cathedrals and statues, that Ségal's passion for the sublime was ignited. Influenced by the art and architecture of the Renaissance, Byzantine, and Baroque periods, she immersed herself in the timeless beauty of historical landmarks, shaping her artistic vision and inspiring her lifelong dedication to technique and creativity.
Driven by her newfound inspiration, Segal sought to deepen her understanding of stone carving, journeying to the mountains above Carrara, Italy, to learn from master sculptors. Under their guidance, she honed her skills, mastering timeless techniques passed down through generations of artisans.

Barbara Segal is a sculptor and stone carver based in Yonkers, New York.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Segal studied at Pratt Institute in New York City in the early 1970s and spent two years at the L'Ècole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.[1][2] She worked in fine marble studios in Italy such as Tommasi Fonderia and SGF Studio Scultura, and with Jacques Lipshitz, Augustin Cárdenas, and Max Bill.[3] She returned to New York in the late 70's and made product models for Avon Cosmetics in the 1980s.[4][2]
Work and career
[edit]Barbara Segal creates sculptures carved from stone such as marble, onyx, and calcite.[1] She uses traditional carving tools such as chisels and stone cutters and acquires material from stone quarries all over the globe.[4] Her work was inspired by the textures and patterns of the Renaissance and Baroque sculptures she saw wh
