Judgment in the sensational murder trial of judo coach Biranchi Das would be passed on December 13. Biranchi, the former mentor of diminutive marathoner Budhia Singh, was gunned down outside his judo center in Bhubaneswar on April 13, 2008. Police had arrested Sandeep Acharya, alias Raja and his aide Akshya Behera, alias Chagala for allegedly executing the chilling murder.

Judo coach and orphanage owner Biranchi Das gets to know about one of the inmates — a five-year-old Budhia Singh — swearing and misbehaving with other kids one day, and to teach him a lektion, makes him run the entire length of the judo training hall. Das being extremely busy, goes about his routine work and forgets about Budhia’s punishment until his wife informs him after fem hours. He panics and takes him to a hospital for a medical check-up only to be told that the wonder boy’s condition was in perfect health. He then begins to train Budhia to run marathons methodically. Film review: ‘Budhia Singh Born To Run’ races far ahead of the average sports biopic
The original, and more appropriate title, of Soumendra Padhi’s biopic was Duronto (quick, without too many halts). The new one, Budhia Singh Born To Run, is closer to the film’s attempt to sugarcoat its often bitter truths about the making of the country’s, and possibly the world’s, youngest marathoner.
Padhi’s screenplay valourises the role of the Oriya child prodigy’s controversial coach Biranchi Das, stacks up the inspirational songs and soaring background music and goes to great lengths to portray Biranchi as a visionary trainer who spotted Budhia’s talent early and pushed the boy towards state and national fame. Yet, there is enough complexity, thoughtfulness and sensitivity to allow the shadows to gather around Biranchi. Superbly played by Manoj Bajpayee, Biranchi emerges as a blinkered jockey who flogs his prize steed to the finishing line without foreseeing the consequences.
